Lisbon – you absolutely got me! I just spent 5 days over there for the DNX festival, the ultimate event to meet like-minded people and other digital nomads from all around the world. And I am so enthusiastic about my trip so that I definitely recommend you to go there and explore the charming Portuguese city by yourself.
On the first sight you could really get the feeling of being in small San Francisco with the lots of ups and downs and the beautiful old cable cars everywhere. So impressive, especially for your camera!

Lisbon has like hundred stunning viewpoints from which you have an amazing view all over the city. If you like to see some of them you can consider taking a Tuk Tuk; that brings you in 1-2 hours to the most beautiful spots, while receiving interesting background information. But in general, I would suggest you to take an Uber or the metro to get from A to B, as Lisbon has very steep hills and exploring the city can be so exhausting – even though the views compensate everything!
The different districts are absolutely worth an exploration tour. For some shopping trips you can go to Baixa whereas Alfama, part of the old-town, is so charming with its beautiful houses and facades. The district Bairro Alto is THE place to be if you need some cold drinks and a nightout. One bar follows another and especially during the summer months, all streets are fully crowded and people from all over the world are enjoying their drinks outside, just celebrating life. Amazing, that´s how i like it!
And you cannot come to Lisbon, without trying the famous Pastel de Nata. It is like flaky pastries filled with pudding and just sooo tasty! You can also make a stop in the Time Out Market where you can get delicious domestic food, find some souvenirs or just get inspired by the lively ambience and different smells everywhere.
One more bonus of Lisbon: the water, which is directly nearby! You can walk along the Tejo river, enjoy the city`s beaches or even go for a really nice swim at the beautiful Guincho Beach, which is just around 30km away.
During my stay, I experienced different kind of housings, for every taste and price range and i can really recommend all of them:
- Oasis Backpackers Hostel was very familiar with kind staff, a good location and fair prices. It´s clean and has a super welcoming terrace and good breakfast.
- LX Boutique Hotel is middle – till higher prized with a beautiful extravagant boutique style in pastel colors, super friendly staff, delicious and various breakfast, an amazing sea view and a big private terrace if you book a room at the rooftop.
- Casa Balthazar is an absolutely insane hotel with pure luxury! We got a private jacuzzi on our own terrace with perfect view over the oldtown, super classy furnitured rooms with cozy beds. The hotel has a big garden with a wonderful pool and we were incredibly happy like small childs to get the chance to stay there. I can absolutely recommend this paradisal villa hotel!!

But my personal highlight was the DNX Festival, where I could finally meet my digital nomad friends again, network and exchange for future exciting projects and expand my knowledge in the various workshops. There were many great and well-known speakers, who shared their vision and spread positivity and inspiration for an location independent life. I just love being surrounded by those amazingly inspiring people and you should keep the DNX Festival in 2019 Berlin in mind if you like to join the next upcoming digital nomad event as well.
In general, Lisbon is kind of a hotspot for people like us who love to work location independent from our Laptops. Here are so many nice co-working spaces, cafes and restaurants where you can meet-up with like minded people or just work on your own projects in a really nice atmosphere.
Thus, this trip is just one more proof for me, that I DEFINITELY made the right decision two years ago, when I quit my job and started following my dreams. It is so freaking unbelievable what life offers you when you just let things go and surround yourself with the right people.
